From a balmy 26 degrees to dismal rain – May has seen it all, weather-wise. But you can’t dampen our spirits. To show you just how optimistic we are about the sun getting its aviators out soon, we headed to our Salvation Army charity shop on Princes Street (in the heart of Oxford Circus) to see what summery gems we could find. We didn’t have to rummage too much to find some fantastic second-hand bargains to inspire you. From work-wear to weddings, we’ve got it sussed.

Outfit one – work-wear
Finding it hard to put together an outfit that’s suitable for the hot weather but work-friendly too? We hear you! When it’s hot and sunny we don’t want to be wearing trouser suits. To keep it chic go for a neutral pallet of black and white – think Chanel. This black and white tweed style skirt is perfect – just the right amount of 80s preppy. Paired with a lace blouse that gives hints of the boho style that is trending this summer, this is a winning combination. And you can’t go wrong with black and white pointed mules this season. The patent black handbag is the perfect addition for practicality and style. We love this look.

Outfit two – wedding guest
Summer is almost here, and with that, comes wedding season. And with wedding season comes a whole lotta agonising outfit decisions. Instead of forking out for something new every time, you might be surprised at what you can get on a budget in a charity shop. Jumpsuits are perfect. They’re right on trend this season (especially with a wide leg) and it’s your whole outfit sorted with just one garment. Easy! This classy cream jumpsuit we found ticks the trend for pinstripes as well. We paired it with a pair of low-heeled navy blue shoes with sequin detail, and a navy bag to add colour.

Outfit three – barbecue
When the sun is out there is one thing we love – a good barbeque! We’ve found the perfect smart-casual outfit that’ll take you from afternoon to evening. Pairing ripped jeans with a loose fitting shirt makes for a seriously cool and effortless look. Rips are trending at the moment and, bonus, they help to keep you cool! (And here’s a tip – find a great pair of jeans for a bargain in a charity shop, and rip them up yourself for authentic style!) These gorgeous vintage-looking lace heels give your outfit a first class upgrade while the vintage style handbag adds the perfect amount of detail to this summery combination. Who would have thought this was all second hand?

Outfit four – afternoon tea
It’s safe to say we are big fans of afternoon tea here at The Salvation Army. Finger sandwiches and clotted cream scones? Yes please! The colour of this fitted yellow tee (from Vivienne Westwood no less) complements the summer season perfectly and adds a touch of brightness. Don’t be afraid of bright colours – they’re big for SS16 and teaming them with white is the perfect way to keep the look fresh. This white skirt with over-lace is so dainty, and with these white and gold sandals you will look as sweet as a pot of jam!

There you have it. Summer style that’s sustainable, bang on trend and wallet-friendly. What do you think? Have you been inspired by these wonderful preloved looks? Then check out your local Salvation Army charity shop and see what you find. You’ll be surprised!
