Eager bargain hunters flock to new Salvation Army charity shop in Widnes

Eager shoppers queued outside the door of a new charity shop ahead of its opening in Widnes. Locals waited in anticipation while the Salvation Army Trading Company shop’s team of staff and volunteers held an official opening ceremony, before bargain hunters were welcomed through the doors at 10.30am on Tuesday 26 April in the Albert Square Shopping Centre (WA8 6JW).

Discussing a circular economy with the Chartered Institute of Waste Management Wales

It was a real privilege to be invited as a guest speaker to the Chartered Institute of Waste Management Wales, whose AGM was held at the Glyndwr University in Wrexham last week. The theme of the event was “moving to a circular economy” and delegates came from a wide range of backgrounds and industries including the Welsh Government, local authorities, sustainability and the environment, waste management, charities and other private organisations – all with an interest in reducing waste and increasing reuse.

James Felkins is pride of Halesowen as he wins Salvation Army Volunteer of the Year

A West Midlands man has been awarded Volunteer of the Year by the Salvation Army Trading Company, which runs a family of charity shops across the UK. James Felkins volunteers at the Halesowen charity shop on Hagley Street and has won the coveted award, not only for the charity’s Midlands region, but he beat tough competition from hundreds of other volunteers to win the charity’s overall UK title.

Thirsk Salvation Army charity shop celebrates Tour de Yorkshire

The Salvation Army charity shop in Thirsk is celebrating the Tour de Yorkshire with a special window display in preparation for when the famous international cycle race passes through the small North Yorkshire market town on Sunday. Shop team member, Kirsty Grimston, transformed the shop’s window, displaying clothes and accessories using a theme of blue and yellow, and of course,  installing a bicycle right in the centre.

Former cabinet maker restores furniture to repay Salvation Army kindness

A former traditional cabinet maker is using the skills he honed during his working life to repay the support of The Salvation Army. Gordon Wallace, from Glasgow, is a volunteer at the church and charity’s Dumbarton Road shop where he rescues and repairs pieces of furniture that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Banking careerwear saved from landfill

A new initiative set up between Lloyds Banking Group and Salvation Army Trading Company is set to save old, worn and outdated careerwear from landfill across the UK. The Group is working with The Salvation Army to provide staff with a service that will see old careerwear recycled from more than 2,000 branches and offices, including those of Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland and Halifax.

Scottish designers launch Zero Waste couture collections

Former Miss Scotland and Miss United Kingdom (2010) Nicola Mimnagh, modelled specially-created  Zero Waste fashion collections in Glasgow on 15 March, in the window of the Salvation Army Trading Company’s flagship store in Dumbarton Road. Two Scottish designers have transformed unwanted clothing donated to the charity into striking high-fashion collections challenging perceptions of textile waste.
